40ft Container Dimensions & Details

The 40ft standard container offers roughly 2,350 cubic feet of interior space, twice that of the 20ft conex box, in the same 8-foot width. It is the workhorse container for construction companies, agricultural operations, and any business that moves or stores significant volumes of material. Weighing up whether to rent or buy this size? See our rent vs buy guide.

A 40ft needs a longer approach for delivery than a 20ft. For farms, construction sites, and commercial properties with the access to receive it, the 40ft is the most cost-efficient option per cubic foot of storage. Available in used WWT and one-trip. Our container condition guide has the full grade breakdown.

Delivering 40ft Containers Across Pennsylvania

Site Requirements for 40ft Delivery

A 40ft container needs more room to deliver than a 20ft. The truck with a loaded tilt-bed trailer runs about 80 feet long. Here is what you need:

  • Approach length: about 100 feet of clear, firm surface ahead of where the container will sit.
  • Width clearance: At least 12 feet wide throughout the delivery path.
  • Overhead clearance: at least 14 feet minimum for the loaded truck. More is better.
  • Firm ground: The landing area needs to carry the container's weight, roughly 8,000 lbs empty. Concrete, compacted gravel, and hard-packed dirt all work well.

40ft Delivery Across Pennsylvania

  • Philadelphia and the collar counties, from Center City out through Montgomery, Delaware, Bucks and Chester: 1 to 2 weeks
  • The Lehigh Valley and the Poconos, from Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton out through the gaps to Stroudsburg and Mount Pocono: 1 to 2 weeks
  • Northeastern Pennsylvania and the Coal Region, from Scranton and Wilkes-Barre through Hazleton to Pottsville and the Susquehanna boroughs: 1 to 2 weeks
  • Dutch Country and the Susquehanna Valley, from Lancaster and Reading through York, Harrisburg and the Cumberland Valley to Chambersburg: 1 to 2 weeks
  • Pittsburgh, western Pennsylvania and the Erie shore, from the Mon Valley and the gas counties north through Butler and Mercer to the lake: 1 to 2 weeks
  • Central Pennsylvania, the Alleghenies, the Northern Tier and the Pennsylvania Wilds, meaning State College, Altoona, Johnstown, Williamsport and everything above Interstate 80: 2 to 3 weeks
Not sure if your site works for a 40ft? Call or text with your address and a description of the access. We can usually tell you right away whether a standard tilt-bed delivery will work.
FAQ

40ft Container Questions

A 40ft container needs about 100 feet of straight, level run measured back from where it will sit, plus at least 14 feet of overhead clearance and roughly 10 to 12 feet of width. That straight run is the constraint that stops most 40ft deliveries, not the weight and not the turn into the property. Two 20ft containers often solve a site that will never take a 40ft, and it costs nothing to ask before you order.
Wind and Water Tight units start at $2,491 delivered in Philadelphia, and delivery is included in that number. What you pay depends on the grade you choose, on what is in stock when you order and on the access at your site. Prices are set by our supply partner and change without notice, so the price quoted to you in writing is the one that applies to your order. Prices captured 2026-08-06.
Warranty runs by grade: one-trip units carry a 10 year structural and no-leak warranty, cargo worthy and wind and water tight units carry 5 years, and economy units carry a 1 year, no roof leak only warranty.
Delivery runs typically 1 to 2 weeks for Philadelphia and the collar counties, the Lehigh Valley and the Poconos, northeastern Pennsylvania and the Coal Region, Dutch Country and the Susquehanna Valley, and Pittsburgh, western Pennsylvania and the Erie shore, and 2 to 3 weeks for central Pennsylvania, the Alleghenies and the Northern Tier Scheduling usually sets the date more than distance does, so the earlier you tell us the drop spot and the access, the tighter the window we can hold.
